The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (445 km) long and ranges 4 to 18 miles (6.5 to 29 km) from rim to rim. The elevation at the South Rim is 7,200 feet (2,195 m) and the North Rim is approximately 1,000 feet (305 m) higher. The elevation at the bottom is 2,500 feet (762 m) and has the oldest rock called Vishnu Schist and is about 2 billion years old. There are seven climatic zones which are the equivalent of travel from Canada to Mexico. Temperatures average 30 degrees Fahrenheit (18 C) higher in the inner canyon than on the rims. Grand Canyon was established as a national park on February 26, 1919.
